Draw prediction Toto Wolff: It is unlikely that the medium-soft strategy would allow us to overtake Red Bull

Mercedes chief executive Toto Wolff believes that the team could not have beaten Max Verstappen to win the Mexican Grand Prix, even if they had decided to change their strategy during the race.

The medium-hard option, which Mercedes relied on, did not work so well due to not the best work of the hardest rubber lineup, and also because of the extremely high wear resistance of the medium.

Wolff was asked if Mercedes could somehow turn the tide if the team changed their strategy during the race and switched their drivers to soft instead of hard with a later moment of a single pit stop:

I do not think that this strategy would allow us to overtake Red Bull - just because of the gaps. After all, we are talking about actually a mirror version of the Red Bull strategy.

If we also chose the soft-medium strategy, then in the first turn it could give some kind of advantage. Lewis started from the outside trajectory - so it`s hard to say how it would have ended in the first turn. But yes, on a different strategy, we would be even closer to Red Bull.

Wolff also agreed that in Mexico City, the team could have missed the best chance to win the race this season. The last time Mercedes went a season without a win was in 2011:

Yes, the simulation data says that Mexico had a better chance. On the other hand, we see a trend - that Mercedes is starting to struggle. I`m proud of what the team did this weekend. We experimented a lot, the guys tried to push the boundaries of the possible. I think in the remaining races we will both try to show the maximum, and mainly prepare for the next season.
