Jamie Carragher weighs in on Trent Alexander-Arnold`s possible move to Real Madrid. The defender`s contract with Liverpool expires next summer. Trent is a student of the club.
A local guy is always treated differently. We saw this with Steven Gerrard. Even contemplating a move to Chelsea temporarily damaged his relationship with Liverpool fans twice during his career. Was it fair? That`s just reality when you`re dealing with a passionate and loyal fan base.
My former teammate Michael Owen had a year left on his contract when he left Liverpool for Real Madrid in 2004. At that time, Liverpool was experiencing difficulties; a new coach, Rafael Benitez, arrived with an uncertain future. Real paid just ?8 million for a player who was worth much more.
His time at Manchester United caused further damage to his reputation, but the circumstances of his departure to Real Madrid also did nothing to improve his legacy.
The biggest problem for Trent is the free transfer. As with McManaman, fans will feel the club is losing an ?80m player for free and they won`t like it.
My advice to Trent is to sign a new contract with a reasonable buy-out option that will allow the club prediction by buy draw predictions to be compensated if Real Madrid or anyone else decides to buy him.
